Don't get me wrong; I love the current explosion of independently made video games. Without the indie craze, we wouldn't have gems like Bastion and Minecraft, games by small, independent teams that have captured the imagination of millions of people and inspired other game developers. We also wouldn't have the many lesser-known but still excellent titles like Dungeons of Dredmor and Cthluhu Saves the World that have delighted savvy gamers.
Along with these great titles, however, comes a crop of independent games that rub many of us the wrong way. Some simply aren't well-made, but others suffer from an air of almost intolerable pretension that makes me grit my teeth and turn the darn game off. Getting the feeling that the game creator believes him or herself to be smarter or better than the rest of us can be a real detriment to enjoying a game, and can actively shut players off from the message the game is trying to convey. Nobody wants that, so I'm going to briefly take up my own mantle of pretension and tell aspiring indie game creators how to stay off my naughty list.
Don't Try to Revolutionize Gaming Without First Mastering the Game-Making Craft
I always cringe when I see inexperienced game creators announce that they'll be turning gaming on its head or challenging long-established conventions with their independent projects. The result is usually less-than-spectacular, and ends up making these newbie game developers look both clueless and pretentious. While some indie gaming studios are composed of industry veterans who have the experience to pull off wild experiments, this message isn't for them. It's for folks who just got out of game design school or who are self-taught and have decided to make their mark on the world of gaming.
We've all played a game or two that has a great concept behind it but fails in terms of execution. It's obvious when a game studio has bitten off more than it can chew, and that's why new indie game creators should try producing several more-standard games before trying to revolutionize the industry. That means game developers find more success with their projects and we get fewer indie games with poor controls or confusing user interfaces, so everybody wins.
Don't Tell Me What to Think
Nobody likes being moralized at, but some indie game creators are convinced that they have an Important Message to deliver to the world, and that pulling 'gotcha' moves on their audience is a good way to get that message across. Sometimes it's a case of clumsy storytelling, but other times the game has obviously been created as propaganda.
Pretentious Game 3
I don't care if you want to spread your religious beliefs or if you've simply decided you're going to blow everybody's mind thanks to the hazy results of a pot-fueled philosophy session. Games are going to be experienced by people with a wide range of personal beliefs, and who want the freedom that interactive entertainment provides to come to their own conclusions about the message of a game. Attempts to force players around to a specific point of view via the medium of entertainment make you look boneheaded, not brilliant. They also make me angry and cause me to lower your game's score when I review it. So, there.
Don't Forget to Make It Fun
It doesn't matter how amazingly high-concept your game is. If it isn't fun to play, nobody will want to play it. For this point, I'm going to single out the 'girl games' movement. Back in the late '90s, a bunch of academics did some studies about why girls and women weren't getting into video games at the same rates as men and boys. These folks determined that girls were interested in cooperation rather than competition in games, among other gender-stereotyped preferences. In response, a number of well-meaning indie developers attempted to make games that were scientifically designed to appeal to women. The problem? Most of them simply weren't fun to play. In their pretension that they knew what women enjoyed better than the women themselves, these developers set themselves up for failure.
Forgetting the fun is a common pitfall for new game developers, especially those with a strong artistic vision and a lack of feedback from players during the development process. It doesn't matter if one's design document is brilliant; if most people don't find a game interesting or entertaining to play, it won't get far. Games can certainly be art, but that doesn't mean that all art makes a good game.
Don't Act Like a Big Old Jerk in Public
Seriously, indie developers. Nobody likes somebody who always has to prove themselves the most important or brilliant game creator in the room. Don't get into yelling matches with rivals or critics on Twitter, and don't go around insulting people in the press. In my job wading through game industry gossip for my column The Weekly Dish, I see this stuff more often than one would expect.
What is pretension, after all, but a manifestation of a person's need to feel superior to others because of a lack of real self-confidence? Bad public behavior, be it due to a developer's attempt to be an Internet tough guy or because of an inability to handle criticism, just results in a poor public image and a reduction in future employment opportunities. It also doesn't help you get any dates.
What do you think, fellow gamers? Have you ever picked up a game you found unbearably pretentious? Would avoiding these issues reduce the number of poorly made or overly pretentious indie games? Let us know in the comments.
